The Donor Journey: How to Guide a Funder From “Who Are You?” to “How Do I Invest?”

Think about your closest friendship. It didn’t start with “Will you be my best friend?” It started with a conversation. Then another. Then a shared experience. Then trust. Then one day, you realized, this person has my back. That’s how funding relationships work too.

People don’t jump from “I don’t know you” to “Here’s $100,000.” They move through a journey. And if you understand that journey, you can guide it instead of leaving it to chance.

The 5 Steps: Identify → Qualify → Cultivate → Solicit → Steward

Step 1: Identify

Find people who already care about what you do and have the capacity to fund it.

  • Study funder databases and grant directories in your field
  • Look at who funds organizations similar to yours
  • Follow funders on social media — learn what they talk about
  • Attend events where funders and grantmakers gather

Step 2: Qualify

Understand what a funder truly wants. Read between the lines of their guidelines. What outcomes excite them? What language do they use? What have they funded before?

Step 3: Cultivate

Build the relationship before you ask. Share your results. Invite them to see your work. Send updates that show momentum. Cultivation is where most organizations drop the ball. They identify a funder, confirm it’s a fit, and then skip straight to the ask. That’s like proposing on the first date.

Step 4: Solicit

Make a clear, confident ask. By this point, the ask should feel like an invitation, not a surprise. You’re giving them an opportunity to be part of something meaningful. Be specific: how much, for what, and for how long.

Step 5: Steward

What you do after you get the grant determines whether you get the next one. Send updates, share results, and make the funder feel like a partner. Send a thank-you within 48 hours. Provide regular updates on how the funds are being used.

Without a path, people don’t decide — they drift. Give them a path, and they’ll walk it with you.

Your Next Step

Map your top five funder prospects right now. Where is each one on this journey? Identify, Qualify, Cultivate, Solicit, Steward. Meet them where they are and move them one step forward. That’s all it takes.
